Introducing Lotus Cave

Inside the Lotus Cave, there are carvings of one Buddha, two disciples, and two Bodhisattvas. The main statue is a 5.10-meter-tall statue of Sakyamuni. Unlike other Buddha statues, this one stands upright, clad in a cassock, reminiscent of Sakyamuni's journey from distant India to China to spread Buddhism. Bas-relief carvings of his disciples flank the cave, with Kasyapa and Ananda accompanying him closely. Kasyapa holds a staff (unfortunately, his head and face have been stolen), while Ananda stands in respectful obeisance.

The graceful and magnificent statues of the Bodhisattvas seem to embody the majesty and prosperity of the Buddha's world. The walls of the cave are covered with niches of various sizes, arranged in distinct layers or staggered. The niches are beautifully composed, featuring pointed arches, lintels, and eaves, as well as garlands, curtains, and tassels. They also feature motifs of clouds, curling grass, geometric patterns, lotus, and precious flowers, all meticulously carved and varied. Atop the dome, a large and exquisite lotus blossom is carved in high relief, making the over-three-meter-tall blossom stand out even more prominently within the cave. Surrounding the blossom are six large, graceful, and vividly portrayed flying figures, each holding fruit. Celestial garments and clouds dance with the figures, fluttering and flowing as if to the rhythm of music, bringing the entire caisson to life, transforming its former tranquility and profoundness into a vibrant and dynamic atmosphere.
