Guyang Cave, located in the southern section of Longmen Mountain, was excavated in 493 AD. It is the earliest cave of the Longmen Grottoes, boasting the richest Buddhist content and the highest level of calligraphic artistry. It is magnificent in scale and imposing in appearance. During the reign of Emperor Guangxu in the late Qing Dynasty, Taoists altered the main statue of Sakyamuni to resemble Taishang Laojun, falsely claiming that Laozi once practiced alchemy here. Hence, it is also known as Laojun Cave.

Guyang Cave, carved from a natural limestone cave, is home to a dazzling array of Buddhist niches on its walls and ceiling. The intricate carvings on the lintels and backlights depict scenes of worship, architectural styles, and lintel decorations, each showcasing a rich variety of motifs and patterns, perfectly showcasing the high level of painting and carving techniques of the time. Guyang Cave boasts nearly a thousand inscriptions, making it the largest collection of preserved inscriptions among Chinese grottoes. Nineteen of the renowned "Twenty Pieces of Longmen" Wei stele works can be found in Guyang Cave. These inscriptions, each elegantly shaped and composed with a vigorous and simple style, and possessing a structure and brushwork that strikes a balance between official script and regular script, are considered masterpieces of Wei stele calligraphy and are admired by calligraphy enthusiasts both domestically and internationally for their unique charm.
