Zhenwu Temple (Xuan Emperor Palace), located atop Zhuyu Peak, is known to Taoists as the " North Peak , " a counterpart to Wudang Mountain's " South Peak . " Originally built during the Tang Dynasty, the temple was known as the " Xuanyuan Temple . " Through generations of expansion and restoration, it has shaped the grandeur of the Xuan Emperor Palace today. The bronze statue of Zhenwu Emperor within the temple stands at 3.45 meters, making it the tallest in China.
Zhenwu Emperor is a northern deity in Han Chinese mythology. He is said to be the son of Pangu, father of the Yan and Huang Emperors, and a descendant of Fuxi, the ancestral dragon of China. According to Taoist legend, Zhenwu Emperor achieved immortality in Yuntai Mountain.
According to Taoist legend, the Great Emperor Zhenwu became an immortal in Yuntai Mountain and was appointed to guard Wudang Mountain. The Xuan Emperor Palace in Yuntai Mountain became his temporary palace. He would return to Yuntai Mountain every year to reside and appear in person, so this palace has always been very popular.
