Introducing Qian Tang Zhi Zhai
Located in the northwest corner of Tiemen Town, Xin'an County, Luoyang, the Qiantang Zhizhai Museum, founded by Zhang Xun, a veteran of the 1911 Revolution, is China's only epitaph museum. It is renowned for its collection of over 1,400 stone epitaphs from the Tang Dynasty and past dynasties. Zhang Binglin once inscribed the museum with the inscription "Qiantang Zhizhai" in ancient seal script. Qiantang Zhizhai is a treasure trove of historical materials for the study of the Tang Dynasty's three hundred years of civil and military achievements, as well as its calligraphic art. Its rich content has earned it the title "Stone Book of the Tang Dynasty" and "History of the Evolution of Tang Calligraphy."
An epitaph is a square stone tablet that records the deceased's lineage, nobility, life events, spouse and descendants, time and place of burial, and words of eulogy and praise. Because it is buried with the tomb, it is called an epitaph. The museum currently holds over 2,000 epitaphs. Mr. Zhang Fang is considered the master of Chinese epitaphs, his achievements unprecedented. He collected nearly 3,000 Tang dynasty epitaphs, most of which are from the Tang Dynasty. The Qian Tang Zhi Zhai collection of Tang dynasty epitaphs accounts for nearly one-third of all Tang dynasty epitaphs unearthed in China, making it the largest collection of Tang dynasty epitaphs in China.
