The Shanzhou Dikanyuan (Shanzhou Dikanyuan) is located in Beiying Village, Zhangbian Township, Shanzhou District, Sanmenxia City, Henan Province, 11 kilometers from downtown Sanmenxia. It covers a planned area of 23 square kilometers. As an ancient and fascinating residential style, the Dikanyuan (Shanzhou Dikanyuan) holds a rich cultural heritage. It is the only underground ancient residential structure in China, and perhaps even the world, and is one of the four unique ancient residential structures in my country. It is known as "an ancient village beneath the horizon, a living fossil in the history of residential architecture."
The troglodyte courtyards are durable, warm in winter and cool in summer, windproof, soundproof, and earthquake-resistant. The temperature inside the pits stays above 10°C in winter and around 20°C in summer, earning them the nickname "natural air conditioning and constant-temperature residences." Upon entering the village, one hears only the sounds of people, the crowing of chickens, and the barking of dogs, but no houses. This aptly translates to "entering the village but not the people, and seeing the trees but not the village."
