Yuanyang Lake Scenic Area is located in Fuchun Town, western Wuyuan County, Jiangxi Province, on the west side of the Jingdezhen-Baishaguan Highway, 43 kilometers from Ziyang Town, the county seat. It is Asia's largest wintering habitat for wild mandarin ducks, a National AAAA-level tourist attraction, and a Jiangxi Provincial Nature Reserve.
Yuanyang Lake, formerly known as Datangwu Reservoir, is a medium-sized reservoir with construction begun in 1958 and completed in 1960. In the early 1980s, the favorable ecological environment surrounding the reservoir attracted numerous mandarin ducks to overwinter, leading to its gradual name change to Yuanyang Lake in 1986. It was designated a provincial nature reserve in 1997.
The county is located in the mid-subtropics and has the characteristics of the East Asian monsoon zone. It has a mild climate, abundant rainfall, a short frost period, and distinct four seasons.
Yue Lao Temple: Locals say that wishes made here are highly authentic. Legend has it that this place was once an ancient temple. At some point, a couple found refuge there and lived happily ever after. They were buried in front of the temple, and soon, two inseparable pine trees grew by their graves. Later, as more and more couples flocked to visit, the "Yue Lao Temple" was built on the site of the ancient temple, where couples could make their vows of staying together through life and death.
The Heart of the Lake Island stands proudly in the center of the emerald waters. The island boasts a pavilion, a covered bridge, and a mandarin duck viewing pavilion, along with orchards of peach, plum, and orange trees. Since 1986, over 2,000 pairs of mandarin ducks have flocked here each year to overwinter. During the day, over a thousand pairs roost in the bay, their red beaks and emerald plumage blooming like flowers. They form inseparable pairs, often playing in the water, foraging, or soaring through the skies. In the evenings, pairs nestle in the lakeside woods, carefree and carefree, their whispers echoing from time to time.
Mandarin ducks are medium-sized ducks with distinctive features for identification in the wild. They are between the size of mallards and winged teals, measuring 38-45 cm in length and weighing about half a kilogram. Males are distinguished by their coloration. The male has a red beak and orange-yellow legs, with vibrant and ornate plumage. The head features a dazzling crest, a broad white eyebrow behind the eye, and a pair of chestnut-yellow fan-shaped feathers that stand upright on the back like a sail. These feathers are unique and striking, making them easy to identify in the wild. The female has a black beak, orange-yellow legs, a gray-brown head and upper body, a white eye area, and a thin white eyebrow behind it. This distinctive feather is also very striking and easy to identify in the wild. Currently, there are no similar species in my country, making it unmistakable.
