According to historical county annals, Gexian Mountain was known as Yungang Mountain before the Han Dynasty. It was renamed Gexian Mountain, also known as Geshan, after Ge Xuan (later known as Gexianweng), a renowned Taoist priest, medical scientist, and founder of the Lingbao School of Taoism, practiced alchemy and ascended to heaven here during the first year of the Chiwu reign (238-251 AD) in the late Han Dynasty. Combining religious culture with natural beauty, Gexian Mountain is a place where Taoism and Buddhism coexist harmoniously, fostering a religious culture characterized by "one mountain, two religions, and the dual cultivation of Taoism and Buddhism."
Qianshan County has a mid-subtropical warm and humid climate. It is close to the ocean and is affected by the cross-influence of the monsoons from the Asian continent, the Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean. It has a mild climate, abundant rainfall, sufficient sunshine, and four distinct seasons. The annual rainfall is 1733-2000 mm, and the average annual temperature is 8.7℃-17.9℃. The average temperature in the coldest month of January is 16℃-5.6℃, and the average temperature in the hottest month of July is 18.7℃-29.4℃. The average annual sunshine is 1952 hours, and the dominant wind direction all year round is southeasterly.
There are many historical sites on Gexian Mountain, including the Foot Washing Pit, Mounting Stone, Dismounting Stone, Alchemy Platform, Quieting Rock, Immortal's Footprints, Ascension Platform, Incense Burner Peak, Seven Star Well, Taoist Stone, Putong Tower, Sword Testing Stone, Longyan Well, Baibu Ridge, and Thousand-Year-Old Pines.
Since the Ming Dynasty, the temples and monasteries on Gexian Mountain have formed the custom of opening the mountain gate on the first day of June and closing the mountain gate on the first day of October every year. The temple fairs formed during this period have become a scenic spot in the culture of Gexian Mountain.
