Gao'an City Museum, originally located at the intersection of Yunquan Road in Gao'an City, covers an area of approximately 1,300 square meters. Its predecessor was the Gao'an County Revolutionary History Memorial Hall, established in 1974. It was officially named Gao'an County Museum in October 1980 and renamed Gao'an City Museum on December 8, 1993.
The old Gao'an Museum, a brick-concrete structure, long suffered from poor facilities (declared a Class CU dangerous building by the building quality supervision department in 2002). This prevented high-quality cultural relics from being exhibited online, resulting in the Gao'an Yuan Dynasty cellar of blue and white underglaze red porcelain, discovered on November 29, 1980, from being displayed to domestic and international audiences. To ensure the safety of these "national treasures," the museum had to keep them hidden deep in its basement.
To meet the cultural needs of domestic visitors and the desire of international tourists to witness these "national treasures," the Gao'an Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government decided in 2010 to build a museum worthy of Gao'an's collection—the new Gao'an Museum. On December 27, 2012, the Jiangxi Provincial Department of Culture (Gan Wenbo Zi [2012] No. 67) approved the establishment of the Gao'an Yuan Blue and White Porcelain Museum, building upon the existing Gao'an Museum. The museum will share offices and exhibitions with the Gao'an Museum. The new Gao'an Museum officially opened on July 25, 2015.
The subtropical monsoon climate makes it suitable for travel in all four seasons.
The exhibition hall of Gao'an City Museum consists of the introductory hall, history and civilization hall, history and humanities hall on the first floor and Yuan Blue and White Porcelain Hall 1 (National Treasure Hall) and Hall 2 (Yuan Blue and White Porcelain Appreciation Hall) on the second floor.
The introductory hall primarily utilizes relief art to showcase the unique characteristics of the museum's collection of Yuan Dynasty blue-and-white underglaze-red porcelain, a national treasure. On either side of the hall, the museum showcases reliefs of the ancient city of Gao'an, along with exhibits featuring Liu Shu, the Song Dynasty historian and editor of the "Zizhi Tongjian," Zhou Deqing, the Yuan Dynasty author of "Zhongyuan Yinyun," the ancestor of Mandarin, and Wu Youxun, a renowned modern physicist. Photoelectric technology and other techniques are used to highlight the content and effectiveness of the displays.
The History and Civilization Hall mainly displays Gao'an's historical civilization and ancient relics from the Paleolithic Age to the Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties; the History and Humanities Hall mainly displays Gao'an's history, humanities, opera, folk customs and other traditional cultures from ancient times to the present, with rich content and vivid expression.
The collection on display in the Yuan Dynasty Blue and White Porcelain Hall uses illustrations, text, wall cabinets, stage sets, and audio-visual displays to accurately recreate the entire process of the Gao'an Yuan Dynasty hoard, from its discovery to its research. This exhibition profoundly reveals its historical and cultural significance, and, drawing on recent research findings, closely reconstructs the owner of the hoard and the purpose of the objects, unveiling its mysteries. The elegance, graceful forms, completeness, large size, exquisite craftsmanship, and rich connotations of Yuan Dynasty blue and white porcelain astound the world.
The second hall of Yuan blue and white porcelain displays over 30 pieces of exquisite and famous Yuan blue and white porcelain from major museums around the world. These pieces are reproduced at a precise, one-to-one scale. Using illustrations, text, vertical cabinets, photoelectric displays, and 3D projection, the exhibition meticulously depicts the process of Yuan blue and white porcelain, from its creation, finalization, development, and export. This exhibition offers a profound insight into the historical, cultural, and political aspects of Yuan blue and white porcelain.
