The Pizhi Pagoda is located in the northwest of Mount Tai, within the Lingyan Temple in Wande Town, Changqing District, Jinan. The Pizhi Pagoda was built in the 12th year of the Tianbao period of the Tang Dynasty (753 AD), rebuilt in the 5th year of the Chunhua period of Emperor Taizong of the Northern Song Dynasty (994 AD), and completed in the 2nd year of the Jiayou period of Emperor Renzong of the Northern Song Dynasty (1057 AD).
The Pizhi Pagoda's main feature is its double-eaved, dense-eaves pavilion-style structure. Its unique shape features a tower with varying heights. The first three floors have double eaves, while the fourth through ninth floors have single eaves. As a dense-eaves pavilion-style structure, the Pizhi Pagoda is unique in China and may be the first example of a dense-eaves pavilion-style pagoda.
The Pizhi Pagoda is an octagonal, nine-story, twelve-eaved pavilion-style brick structure, standing 55.7 meters tall. Its octagonal stone base features relief carvings depicting stories such as Ashoka's conversion to Buddhism during the Maurya Dynasty of ancient India. The pagoda is constructed of blue brick, with eaves on each floor. The lower three floors have double eaves, while floors two through four have flat platforms beneath the eaves. The eaves and diameter taper gracefully from floor to floor. The first four floors of the pagoda feature core columns, with arched openings and steps leading up. From the fifth floor onward, the pagoda is solid. To ascend, one must follow the outer eaves, turning left 90 degrees to enter the upper doorway.
