About one kilometer from the entrance to Huashan Mountain, and about a hundred meters up from Fish Rock, you'll see two large characters, "Shoushan," carved into the stone wall, over a meter in diameter. Legend has it they were written by Chen Tuan. A few steps further up, you'll reach "Wang Meng Terrace," where three large stone characters were inscribed by Baishan Dalishan during the reign of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty. There are houses built on the mountain, known as Huashan Zhongfang.
Wang Meng lived during the Yonghe period of the Eastern Jin Dynasty. As a young man, due to his impoverished family, he lived in seclusion on Mount Huashan, devoted to his studies, and later stationed troops there. Fu Jian of the Former Qin Dynasty admired Wang Meng's reputation, saying, "If Xuande had met Kong Ming three times," and appointed him Minister of the Chancellery. Wang Meng helped him unify the vast northern and southwestern regions, bringing prosperity to the Qin State. In the fourth year of the Qin Jianyuan period (368 AD), Wei, the governor of Yan, seized Shanzhou and attempted to invade the pass. Fu Jian ordered Wang Meng to station troops in Huayin to guard against any threat. Atop Wang Meng Terrace stands the Commander's Terrace, a relic of Wang Meng's stationing.
The warm temperate continental monsoon climate has four distinct seasons, abundant sunshine, and sunny, cold, and dry winters. Spring, summer, and autumn are suitable for travel.
