Baiyun Cave is located on the south side of Maoling Mountain at the eastern foot of Laoshan Mountain in Qingdao City, Shandong Province, with an altitude of 400 meters. It is a natural stone cave composed of four huge rocks stacked in front, back, left and right. The three words "Baiyun Cave" are engraved on the top of the cave, which was written by Yin Linji, a Hanlin in the late Qing Dynasty.
Baiyun Cave in Laoshan is located on the eastern coast of Laoshan, nearly seven miles east of Taiping Palace. From Diaolongzui, ascend the stone steps to the north of the mountainside, passing Xiaoyao Path, Laojun Cave, and then climb another flight of stone steps to reach Baiyun Cave. The cave is named after the white clouds that shroud its entrance most days of the year. Situated on a high and clear terrain with dense forests, it faces a long stream and overlooks the vast ocean. Its elegant environment and exquisite pavilions make it one of the famous Taoist temples in Laoshan, along with Mingxia Cave, known as the Front and Back Streams.
The three characters "Baiyun Cave" are inscribed on the plaque of Baiyun Cave. They were inscribed by Yin Langruo (Zhi Linji), a member of the Imperial Academy in Rizhao during the late Qing Dynasty. The calligraphy is powerful and imposing. In front of the cave stand two ginkgo trees, each large enough to be embraced, like giant umbrellas supporting the sky. Legend has it that the two trees, one male and one female, have lived together for thousands of years and continue to thrive. There is also a lush magnolia tree, also hundreds of years old.
