Although the ancient village is named "Xu'ao," its residents' surnames are not Xu, but Wu. According to records, during the Xuanhe period of the Song Dynasty, during the Fang La Rebellion, Xu Zhen (from Xianju, Taishun) led troops to resist and tragically died. While carrying his coffin back home, he passed by Yuxi (the stream in front of present-day Xu'ao) and a miraculous dew appeared from heaven. As a result, the area, which had suffered from long-term drought and poor harvests, now has abundant harvests year after year. The villagers named this area "Xu'ao" in commemoration.
