Located in Pingyao County in central Shanxi Province, Pingyao Ancient City was founded during the reign of King Xuan of the Western Zhou Dynasty (827-782 BC). Known as one of the "Four Best-Preserved Ancient Cities," Pingyao is one of only two ancient cities in China to have been successfully nominated for World Cultural Heritage status as a whole.
In 2009, Pingyao Ancient City was recognized by the World Records Association as China's most intact ancient county town. On July 13, 2015, Pingyao Ancient City became a national 5A tourist attraction. Pingyao Ancient City is an outstanding example of an ancient Chinese city from the Ming and Qing dynasties, preserving all its characteristics. Furthermore, it offers an extraordinary and comprehensive picture of cultural, social, economic, and religious development throughout Chinese history.
