Located in Pingyao County in central Shanxi Province, Pingyao Ancient City was founded during the reign of King Xuan of the Western Zhou Dynasty (827-782 BC). Known as one of the "Four Best-Preserved Ancient Cities," Pingyao is one of only two ancient cities in China to have been successfully nominated for World Cultural Heritage status as a whole.

In 2009, Pingyao Ancient City was recognized by the World Records Association as China's most intact ancient county town.
