Shiziling is a ridge that forms the border between Shanxi and Hebei provinces. The western part of the ridge belongs to Zuoquan County, Shanxi Province, while the eastern part belongs to She County, Hebei Province. The ridge is named Shiziling because it is shaped like a cross.
The most famous pavilion on Shiziling is the General Zuo Quan Memorial Pavilion, where a heroic story is told: On May 25, 1942, over 2,000 Eighth Route Army troops, including headquarters and logistics, were surrounded by over 30,000 Japanese troops on Shiziling. In this critical moment, Peng Dehuai, Zuo Quan, and Luo Ruiqing decided to break out separately. As General Zuo Quan was leading the last group of troops to break through the encirclement, he was struck in the head by shrapnel and died heroically at the age of 37.
