The Bailongdui Yardang, located in Shanshan County, Turpan Prefecture, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, northeast of Lop Nur, is one of the three major yardangs in the area. The Bailongdui Yardang is located in a very harsh environment. Formed by the uplift of Quaternary lacustrine deposits, it forms a gravelly mound, forming a series of saline-alkali earth platforms. Composed of gravel, gypsum mud, and salt, the platforms are grayish-white in color and reflect silvery light in sunlight, resembling scales. This is why the ancients called this vast group of yardangs "Bailongdui."
