Introducing Tuyugou

Located in Shanshan County, Xinjiang, about 55 kilometers east of Turpan City, the gorge boasts a history spanning over 1,700 years. Once a sacred site for both Buddhism and Islam, it houses the burial place of six of Muhammad's disciples, earning it a high reputation within Islam, earning it the nickname "Mecca of the East."

There are still a small number of villagers living here who work from sunrise to sunset, communicate in the ancient Uyghur language, wear colorful costumes with the most ethnic characteristics, and still use classic donkey carts to travel when visiting relatives and friends. They have completely preserved the ancient Uyghur traditions and folk customs, as if they are living fossils of culture, telling the story of thousands of years.

Climate and best time to travel

June and July are Turpan's hottest months, with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius. August also sees the Turpan Grape Festival, featuring a variety of activities such as grape tastings, Dawaizi performances, Muqam folk song and dance festivities, and large-scale song and dance evenings. Visitors can fully experience the classic Uyghur customs of this grape-rich country. September brings cooler weather, and Hami melons, grapes, and watermelons are ripe.
