Dongpo Chibi, located northwest of the ancient city of Huangzhou on the banks of the Yangtze River, is known as "Chibi" because of its ochre-red rocks that stand like a wall. A popular tourist attraction since the Jin and Tang dynasties, it is known as "a picturesque landscape." Countless scholars and poets have visited the area since ancient times, leaving behind a wealth of relics and calligraphy.
Renowned writer Su Shi (also known as Dongpo), exiled to Huangzhou for his role in the Wudai Poetry Case, often found inspiration here, composing the immortal poem "Nian Nu Jiao: Nostalgia for the Red Cliff," two fu poems (the former and the latter "Red Cliff Fu"), and other masterpieces. Later generations linked Red Cliff with Su Dongpo's name, creating the Dongpo Red Cliff. Research has also linked this area to the site of the Battle of Red Cliff during the Three Kingdoms period.
