Bodao Peak was originally named Hegao Peak. Its towering peak, with its highest point at 1,408.2 meters above sea level, serves as one of the major watersheds between the Yangtze and Huaihe Rivers. White cranes often inhabited the area, leading the ancients to name it after the line from the Book of Songs: "The cranes cry in the nine gaos, their voices heard in the heavens." Later, the peak, Wolonggang below the main peak, was renamed Bodao Peak because of its dragon-like shape, its knife-like ridge, and the presence of unusual pines and rocks. Furthermore, in January 1929, Feng Yuxiang's Sharp Knife Regiment stationed there overnight and, along with local civilians, annihilated over 40,000 remnants of warlord Wu Peifu's army, led by Li Laomo (formerly known as Li Zhenwei).
