Nanjing University's predecessor can be traced back to the Nanjing Imperial College during the Three Kingdoms period, while its modern history began with the founding of the Sanjiang Normal School in 1902. Currently, it has two campuses: the Gulou and Xianlin campuses. The Gulou campus, home to a concentration of ancient buildings, is the primary destination for visitors. Strolling through the lush greenery, you can reminisce about campus life.
The North Building on the Gulou Campus is a landmark of Nanjing University. A Western-style brick and wood structure, it's a place renowned for its beauty. Yu Guangzhong once lamented that "ivy covers the entire North Building," and this remains true today. The red star on the roof stands out prominently.
In front of the old library, two quaint stone tablets, "Liangjiang Normal School" and "Jinling University Hall," record the history of Nanjing University. Those interested in history can visit the adjacent University History Museum.
Zhongshan Building is also worth a visit. In the southeast corner of the campus is John Rabe's former residence, where the famous "Rabe Diary" was written. The ancient buildings on campus, from the eaves to the wall carvings, are worth a careful inspection and perfect for photo opportunities. When the osmanthus flowers are in full bloom, the fragrance fills the air, making a stroll through the grounds even more pleasant.
Every September and October, the branches of osmanthus flowers are in full bloom, and the campus is filled with the fragrance of flowers, making it a pleasant place to stroll.
