Next to the National Essence Building on South Street in Sanhe Ancient Town is the Sanhe Folk Customs Museum. Named "The Doctor's House," it displays 2,000 pieces amassed over 30 years by a private collector in Hefei.
The exhibition hall, divided into two sections, showcases the halls of private residences of civil officials from the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, the mid-Qing dynasty, and the late Qing dynasty. Displays include Ming dynasty cherrywood square tables, rosewood armchairs, nanmu cabinets, golden nanmu step-out beds, and early Qing dynasty portraits of ancestors. Some are architectural components and furniture fragments, yet they are the essence of the houses and furniture. Without these components, a house would lose its splendor, and without these pieces, furniture would lose its splendor. These architectural and furniture fragments date from the Ming and Qing dynasties and other periods. They include reliefs, round sculptures, and openwork carvings, spanning four hundred years. The depictions include flowers, birds, insects, fish, people, and animals, all of which are lifelike and exquisite. Finally, there are vintage photographs from the late Qing dynasty. These rare and precious photographs, produced in photo studios, are extremely valuable.
