Legend has it that it was built by Monk Bao in the early Ming Dynasty, using all the alms he had collected throughout his life. The ancient bridge connects Feixi, Shucheng, and Lujiang counties, hence the name Sanxian Bridge. The bridge blends seamlessly with the Hui-style architecture at the bridgehead, creating a breathtaking sight.
Sanhe is located at the junction of the former Hefei County, Shucheng County and Lujiang County. The bridge got its name because "one bridge spans both banks and the crowing of roosters can be heard in three counties". It is the best-preserved ancient stone bridge in Sanhe.
First built in the Song Dynasty, it boasts a history of over a thousand years, and has been renovated over generations. The last restoration was in the 15th year of the Republic of China, nearly a century ago. Because of this long relationship, the people of Sanhe have developed a deep affection for the bridge, so they affectionately call it the Stone Bridge. From the bridge deck, you can clearly see that the thick bluestone slabs have been polished to a very smooth finish, a testament to the passage of time.
