I lived in Danvers in late 70’s, and vividly recall an amazing Greek bakery that would be open on Sunday mornings for fresh, hot Greek bread. Seems like it was on a side street near a rotary, as we would drive around and then pick up the Sunday paper from a sidewalk vendor.
Does anyone recall this- is the bakery still in business? Is the bread sold locally elsewhere????
Was there a specific name for the bread- it was SOOOOO good!! The loaves were round- may be 12 “
Thanks in advance!!
The Greek bakery you remember in Salem during the late 1970s was likely a small, family-owned establishment that specialized in traditional Greek breads and pastries. Many of these bakeries produced a type of round, crusty bread often referred to as “Greek bread” or “Hellenic bread,” which is typically about 12 inches in diameter and has a slightly chewy interior with a golden crust.
Unfortunately, most of the small Greek bakeries from that era in the Salem/Danvers area have since closed or changed ownership, so it is unlikely that the original bakery is still in business today. Many of these bakeries were run by families and either retired or relocated over the years.
However, you can still find Greek bread locally at a few places in the Salem and North Shore area. Some options include:
If you are looking to recreate the experience, you might also try baking a traditional Greek round loaf at home. Recipes for “Hellenic bread” or “Greek village bread” are widely available online and produce a similar texture and flavor to what was common in the 1970s.
While the exact bakery from 1977 may no longer exist, the style of bread you loved can still be found locally or recreated, allowing you to relive a bit of that Sunday morning tradition.
