Trip to Georgia
Hello. My wife and I ( both 53 yrs old) are planing to take a trip to Georgia this winter. We like sightseeing (both urban & natural), major tourist attractions and charming towns. We will be staying in Dawsonville where we rented an Airbnb and will be visiting Helen. I wanted to know what other towns around that area we could visit. Any recommenadtions for new years eve ?? we heard of the edelweiss drop in Helen, any comments ?? A list of things to do around the area is much appreciated.
Dawsonville and the surrounding area offer a nice mix of charming small towns, natural scenery, and festive events, especially in winter. Since you’re already planning to visit Helen, you’re in for a very Bavarian-themed experience with plenty of opportunities for sightseeing, shopping, and enjoying local food and drinks.
Here are some towns and attractions you might consider visiting in the region:
- Gainesville: About 25 minutes from Dawsonville, known for Lake Lanier and the Northeast Georgia History Center. A nice spot for a leisurely stroll and some lakeside views.
- Blue Ridge: Roughly 1 hour northeast, great for scenic mountain drives, quaint shops, and galleries. The Blue Ridge Scenic Railway is a charming ride, especially in winter with crisp mountain air.
- Suches: A tiny mountain town, very peaceful, ideal for short hikes or scenic drives, close to Vogel State Park.
- Blairsville: About an hour north, offers shops, restaurants, and access to Vogel State Park and Appalachian Trail sections.
- Sautee Nacoochee: Near Helen, famous for its historic chapel and artsy local shops.
For New Year’s Eve in Helen, the “Edelweiss Drop” is a fun, quirky tradition similar to Times Square’s ball drop. It’s family-friendly and generally festive, with local music, food, and a small-town party vibe. Expect crowds but nothing overwhelming.
- Downtown Helen celebration – live music, local food vendors, festive lights, and the Edelweiss Drop at midnight.
- Local restaurants and breweries – many stay open late for the occasion, so you can enjoy dinner and drinks before or after the event.
- Scenic night drives – the surrounding mountains and valleys look beautiful lit up in winter, a more peaceful alternative if crowds aren’t your thing.
Other things to do around Dawsonville and northern Georgia in winter:
- Drive the Russell-Brasstown Scenic Byway for stunning mountain vistas and potential short walks along overlooks.
- Visit Anna Ruby Falls – an easy, paved trail to view the twin waterfalls.
- Check out local wineries and breweries – such as Yonah Mountain Vineyards near Cleveland, GA.
- Historic towns like Dahlonega – gold rush history, wineries, and charming downtown shopping.
- Vogel State Park – short nature walks and picnic areas, a very manageable option if you like fresh air and light hiking.
Overall, combining Helen, Dawsonville, Dahlonega, and a few scenic mountain towns makes for a varied trip with both urban and natural sightseeing. For New Year’s Eve, the Edelweiss Drop is an enjoyable experience, but booking dinner or accommodations in advance is recommended due to holiday crowds.
