Pick up Basketball?
Probably an odd question but my cardio is based on playing basketball. Since we'll be on the Big Island for over 3 weeks I'd like to get some runs in to keep up my fitness. Any rec centers that have drop in basketball? Even better if it's senior (50+) basketball. Thanks.
If you’re looking to keep up your basketball fitness while on the Big Island, there are a few options for pickup games, though organized senior-specific leagues may be limited. Most activity centers welcome adults for drop-in sessions, but schedules can vary seasonally, so it’s best to call ahead or check their websites.
Community Centers / Gyms with Drop-in Basketball:
- Hilo Recreation Center: Offers drop-in basketball, usually open to adults and seniors. The schedule can vary, so contacting them directly is recommended. They have a full gymnasium and a welcoming community atmosphere.
- Kona Community Aquatic & Fitness Center: Located near Kona, they provide adult drop-in basketball sessions. Some evenings may have open gym for older adults or less competitive games. Membership may be required, but short-term passes are available.
- Waikoloa Beach Resort Gym / Hualalai Club: If you are staying near Waikoloa, check with local resort gyms or community centers—they sometimes host pickup games for residents and guests, though you may need to confirm access.
Senior-Specific Options:
- While dedicated 50+ basketball leagues are rare on the Big Island, some community centers may have adult fitness programs or less competitive open gym hours suitable for seniors.
- Check with local senior centers (like the Kohala Senior Center or Hilo Senior Center)—occasionally they organize friendly basketball or fitness activities for older adults.
Tips:
- Bring your own basketball and water—some centers may have limited equipment.
- Check online community boards or Facebook groups for local pickup basketball announcements. Locals often share times and locations for casual games.
- If your goal is cardio rather than competitive play, consider combining gym treadmills or outdoor courts in parks like Recreation Park in Kailua-Kona for shooting and running drills.
Overall, while the Big Island isn’t known for formal senior basketball leagues, the community centers in Hilo and Kona, plus local gyms and outdoor courts, provide opportunities to maintain your basketball-based cardio during a long stay.
