Peach picking
We'll be driving south through the Atlanta area on Sept 22. Is that still peach picking season? And if so, recommendations for places along I75?
Peach picking season in Georgia typically runs from late May through August, with the peak season occurring in July and early August. By September 22, most of the peach picking season will have passed, and many farms may no longer be offering "pick-your-own" opportunities. However, there are still some farms that may have late-season varieties or other fruit picking activities available, such as apples or pumpkins, which you can enjoy while you're traveling.
If you're determined to find some peaches along your route, here are a few places to consider as you drive south on I-75, especially between Atlanta and areas further south:
- Lane Southern Orchards (Fort Valley, GA)
- Located about 2 hours south of Atlanta, Lane Southern Orchards is one of the largest peach farms in Georgia. While their peak peach season may be over by late September, they often have other products available, such as apples or pumpkins, and a market where you can purchase fresh peaches, jams, and other local treats. They also offer tours during the harvest season, so it’s worth checking their schedule for any late-season offerings.
- Peach County (Byron, GA)
- Byron, known as the "Peach Capital of Georgia," is home to several peach orchards. Some orchards may still have late-season peaches or other fruits available for picking or purchase. It’s also a good spot to find local peach-based products, like jams, preserves, and pies, at roadside stands and farm markets.
- The Peach Truck (Various locations, including near I-75 exits)
- While not a "pick-your-own" orchard, The Peach Truck is a popular traveling farm stand that sells fresh Georgia peaches. If you’re looking to pick up some peaches to take home, they may have stands along I-75, especially as you get closer to the middle of Georgia. They often have peaches available through September and sometimes into October.
- U-pick Apple Farms (Varies along I-75)
- Although peaches are mostly out of season, you may still find U-pick apple orchards open in late September. These orchards may also sell peaches if any late varieties are still available. Look for signs for apple picking as you travel through areas like Fort Valley and Byron.
While September may be a bit late for peach picking, you can still enjoy Georgia’s agricultural bounty by visiting one of these farms or markets. Be sure to call ahead or check their websites for specific availability, as farm schedules can vary based on weather conditions and harvest times.
