Zydeco on Thursdays at bowling alleys

I was just wondering what these evenings were like. If anyone has recently attended, could you let me know if it’s a safe area and if tourists are most who attend or is it more of a locals night out? Also, if anyone knows how to get there via public transportation or how much an uber or taxi might be from FQ? It would be this Thursday, 2-13. Also would there be all ages? We are old folks-68/70. Maybe you have other suggestions for Zydeco in FQ or near. Thanks!!!

Zydeco nights at bowling alleys in New Orleans are a unique and fun experience, combining music, dancing, and a casual atmosphere. These events typically take place in places like Rock'n'Bowl, a popular spot for Zydeco, which is known for its live music, dancing, and of course, bowling. Here's what you can expect:

What are these nights like?

Zydeco nights at bowling alleys are a lively but relaxed way to enjoy the local culture. You’ll find a blend of upbeat, rhythmic Zydeco music, which is great for dancing, but it's also very much a social event. The crowd typically enjoys a mix of dancing, listening to the music, and socializing. The vibe is casual, and it tends to attract both locals and tourists who are looking to experience something uniquely New Orleans. While you might see some tourists, many regulars—locals—love to attend as well. It's an excellent opportunity to feel like you're part of the local scene, especially if you're open to mingling and trying out the dance floor.

Safety and Crowd

Rock'n'Bowl and similar venues are generally considered safe, especially on Zydeco nights. However, as with any event, it's always good to stay aware of your surroundings, especially if you're unfamiliar with the area. The venue itself is welcoming and popular, so you will find that most people are friendly and there to have a good time. It's a good idea to stick to well-lit areas and follow the usual precautions. You will find a mix of ages at these events—Zydeco music is popular across generations, so you may find that it’s an all-ages event, with people from 21 to 70+ enjoying the night out. The energy tends to be upbeat, but it’s not overwhelming, making it a great choice for "older folks" who want to enjoy some music without being in an overly energetic party crowd.

Getting There

Rock'n'Bowl and similar venues are located a bit outside the French Quarter, but they are easily accessible via public transportation or by taxi/Uber. A typical Uber or taxi ride from the French Quarter will cost around $10-15 depending on traffic, which is very reasonable for the experience. If you're looking for public transport, you can take the St. Charles streetcar line and get off at a stop near the venue. The streetcar ride offers a nice view of the city, but be aware that public transport can take a bit longer, so if you're on a time crunch, an Uber might be the faster option.

Other Zydeco Venues in the French Quarter or Nearby

  • The Spotted Cat Music Club: Located in the Faubourg Marigny neighborhood, this intimate venue offers live Zydeco and jazz music and has a cozy, vibrant atmosphere.
  • Tipitina's: A famous live music venue in New Orleans, Tipitina’s is known for its rich history and often features Zydeco and other local music genres. It's a bit more of a "go-to" venue for serious music lovers, but still very accessible and welcoming.
  • Maison: Located just outside the French Quarter in the Marigny, Maison offers live Zydeco music in a comfortable setting with dancing and food. It's a great spot if you're looking for a more low-key yet lively experience.

Final Thoughts

Zydeco night at a bowling alley like Rock'n'Bowl is a fun and unique experience that's well-suited to anyone looking to enjoy New Orleans culture. The crowd is generally friendly, the music is upbeat but not overwhelming, and you'll have a great time dancing, even if you're not an expert. Getting there via Uber or public transportation is easy, and the venue is welcoming to all ages. If you're looking for a more laid-back vibe, the other nearby venues like The Spotted Cat and Maison might also be great options for Zydeco music and dancing.
