Parking in KK?

Hi all,

Can’t wait to visit. Will be visiting next month and would like to walk around downtown, check out the shops, eat, hang out a bit. I’m not seeing anywhere to park except the ridiculous 13 per hour lots. Is there something more reasonable ? Seems like a real deterrent to the downtown shopping and eating experience.

Thank you.

Parking in Kailua-Kona downtown can indeed be challenging, especially during peak tourist times. The hourly lots near Ali’i Drive and main shopping streets can feel steep, but there are some alternatives to make your visit more convenient and economical.

Here are some practical options for parking in downtown Kona:

  • Street parking: There are metered street parking spaces along Ali’i Drive and side streets. Rates are generally lower than the private lots, and some spots have time limits of 2–3 hours, so plan accordingly.
  • County lots: The County of Hawaii operates public parking lots near the pier and waterfront areas. These are usually less expensive than private lots and provide easy access to shops and restaurants.
  • Hotel or restaurant validation: Some hotels and restaurants offer validated or discounted parking if you are dining or shopping there. Check with your destination ahead of time.
  • Early arrival or later in the day: Parking is easier in the early morning or later afternoon when the crowds thin out, especially on weekdays.
  • Alternative transport: If parking seems too much of a hassle, consider using ride-shares, taxis, or walking from your lodging if staying nearby. Some local shuttle services also connect popular spots in Kona.

In general, expect to spend some time scouting for a spot if you plan to park right in the heart of downtown. Planning short visits or combining dining and shopping stops can maximize your experience without the stress of hunting for a space.

Walking around downtown Kona is very pleasant, with many shops, galleries, and eateries within a compact area, so once you find parking, most attractions are easily accessible on foot.
