Return trip to Maui
We are returning for our 2nd Maui trip in mid-June. Last time we did a sunset whale cruise, did a partial road to Hana (Paia & Twin Falls), went to Maluaka beach, & Lahaina a lot. What are some things we can do this time around? We plan on doing road to Hana again and getting to the garden of Eden at least. I don’t think we want to do the Haleakala sunrise tour (I’m terrified of heights). I’d like to see the nakalele blowhole, but we had to go up that side of the volcano when we left last time and I thought I was going to fall off the side. Not sure if the road is too scary before nakalele. We are staying in Ka’anapali. Thanks!
Returning to Maui for a second trip gives you a chance to explore areas you may have missed the first time. Since you’ve already done a partial Road to Hana, Lahaina, and some beaches, here are some options and ideas for a more relaxed yet memorable experience while staying in Ka’anapali.
Road to Hana / East Maui
- Since you plan to revisit, consider stopping at Garden of Eden, as you mentioned, for the lush gardens and waterfalls. Try to leave early in the morning to avoid crowds.
- If you want a less strenuous route, consider Waianapanapa State Park near Hana for the black sand beach, sea arches, and coastal views — you can enjoy it without hiking far along cliff edges.
- Other scenic stops: Hamoa Beach for a peaceful stretch of sand, and Pipiwai Trail for a more moderate hike to Waimoku Falls (skip the bamboo forest if heights or narrow paths are uncomfortable).
West & North Maui
- Nakalele Blowhole is a popular stop, but the road and trail to get there can be narrow and rocky. If you are nervous about heights or cliff edges, you might consider viewing it from a safe distance — the viewing area is short but gives a good perspective.
- Honolua Bay is excellent for snorkeling if the ocean is calm — you can rent gear from nearby shops in Kapalua.
- Iao Valley State Monument in Wailuku offers lush scenery and a short, easy walk to the Iao Needle — a much safer, easy alternative to cliffside hikes.
Beaches & Water Activities Near Ka’anapali
- DT Fleming Beach and Black Rock Beach in Ka’anapali are great for swimming, snorkeling, and relaxing. Black Rock often has sea turtles visible offshore.
- Consider a stand-up paddleboarding or kayak tour — you can often see turtles and tropical fish right from the shore.
- Sunset picnic or takeout meal on the beach can be a relaxing way to enjoy Ka’anapali without strenuous activity.
Local Experiences & Sightseeing
- Visit Lahaina Town again but focus on art galleries, shops, and local eateries you may have missed previously.
- Maui Ocean Center near Ma’alaea Harbor is a fun, air-conditioned experience to learn about Hawaiian marine life — perfect if you want a break from heights or winding roads.
- Consider a Molokini snorkeling trip or short boat excursion — calmer than whale watching but still very scenic.
Tips
- For any road trip around the island, always check weather and road conditions, especially on the northwestern side toward Nakalele.
- Start early to avoid crowds at popular stops.
- Plan a mix of short walks, easy hikes, and scenic drives so you enjoy Maui’s beauty without discomfort from heights or winding cliff roads.
By mixing calmer beach days, moderate scenic drives, and safer viewpoints, you can still have a very fulfilling second Maui trip without stressing over the areas that made you nervous last time.
