Catamarans

I am heading to Oahu and staying in the waikiki area end of April. I am wanting to do a catamaran but wasnt sure which and or what would offer the best experience. We arent drinkers

I know they have alot that come out of Waikiki and some that come out of North Shore, do you guys have a preference?

Also, do you recommend a sunset sail? dinner one or any time is fine?

Oahu offers a wide range of catamaran experiences, and your choice really depends on what kind of scenery and activities you are interested in. Staying in Waikiki gives you easy access to a variety of daytime and sunset cruises without needing to drive far. North Shore departures tend to be more focused on nature, wildlife, and less crowded waters, but require a longer drive from Waikiki.

For a non-drinking experience, most catamaran operators can accommodate you just fine. Many offer water, soft drinks, and snacks as part of the trip, and you can always bring your own non-alcoholic beverages. If your main goal is sightseeing, snorkeling, or enjoying the ocean and scenery, you don’t need to worry about alcohol-focused cruises.

  • Waikiki daytime cruises: These typically last 1.5–2 hours, offer great views of Diamond Head, the Honolulu skyline, and may include light snorkeling. Ideal for shorter trips and easy access from your hotel.
  • Waikiki sunset sails: Very popular for the spectacular evening sky and calm waters. Even without drinks, it’s a beautiful, relaxing experience. Some include appetizers or light snacks.
  • North Shore catamaran tours: These are often longer (3–5 hours), focusing on scenic coastlines, marine life, and occasionally snorkeling. You may see turtles, dolphins, or even whales if it’s the right season. Less crowded than Waikiki tours but involve a 1–1.5 hour drive each way.

Whether you choose a sunset or daytime cruise depends on your preference. Sunset sails offer incredible photo opportunities and a romantic vibe, while daytime cruises give you clearer visibility for snorkeling and spotting marine life.

  • Daytime Waikiki sail: Easy, short, scenic, suitable for first-time visitors or families.
  • Sunset Waikiki sail: Relaxing, gorgeous lighting, calm waters, great for non-drinkers.
  • North Shore adventure sail: Longer, more focused on nature, less commercialized, may include snorkeling depending on the operator.

In general, for convenience and minimal driving, Waikiki catamarans are the best choice. If your goal is a more immersive nature experience and you don’t mind the drive, a North Shore departure offers a slightly more adventurous and quieter trip. Either way, booking in advance is recommended as April can be a busy time.
