First visit to Maui….Help please!

Hi! My husband and I are planning our first trip to Hawaii (Maui) next July for our 10 year wedding anniversary. We would like to book a condo thru VRBO. Can someone tell me where a nice low rise condo building would be where it’s not to crowded and what location is best? We would like to be able to lay on the beach.

We plan on renting a vehicle and driving the road to Hana. We want something nice with great views.

Any suggestions and or recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks!!!!

Congratulations on your upcoming 10-year anniversary! Maui is a fantastic choice, and staying in a low-rise condo can provide a more relaxed, intimate experience compared to high-rise resorts. Since you want to enjoy the beach, have privacy, and still be able to drive to attractions like the Road to Hana, location and condo choice are key.

For first-time visitors looking for a combination of beautiful beaches, low-rise buildings, and less crowded areas, the South and West Maui areas are often recommended. South Maui has calm, swimmable beaches, while West Maui offers scenic views and access to Lahaina town.

  • Kihei / South Maui: This area has many low-rise condo complexes, gentle beaches, and a relaxed vibe. Popular options include Maui Kamaole, Kihei Akahi, and Mana Kai. The beaches here are ideal for lounging and swimming, and there are nearby restaurants and grocery stores.
  • Wailea: A more upscale area with stunning beaches like Polo Beach and Ulua Beach. Wailea has several low-rise condos such as Wailea Elua Village, Wailea Ekahi, and Wailea Beach Villas. These offer ocean views, quieter settings, and direct beach access. Perfect for a romantic anniversary getaway.
  • Lahaina / Kaanapali (West Maui): While slightly more touristy, there are some low-rise condo options such as Napili Kai or Papakea Resort. These areas have beautiful beaches and are convenient for exploring Lahaina town, restaurants, and sunset views.

Additional tips for your condo stay:

  • Look for units labeled as “oceanfront” or “beachfront” to ensure direct access to sand and water.
  • Check for amenities like a lanai (balcony), full kitchen, and pool if desired.
  • South Maui tends to be sunnier in July, which is ideal for beach days.
  • Renting a vehicle is perfect for Hana, but plan to leave early in the day for the best experience, and consider stopping at beaches and lookouts along the way.
  • Read recent VRBO reviews carefully for noise, upkeep, and access to the beach, as experiences can vary significantly by unit even within the same complex.

In summary, for your priorities—low-rise condos, beach access, and beautiful views—South Maui (Kihei) and Wailea are excellent choices. Wailea leans more upscale and romantic, while Kihei offers a bit more local vibe and value. Both areas provide a great base for exploring the island, enjoying sunsets, and making the most of your anniversary trip.
