Trip Report - The Land of Misfit Toys

A slightly delayed trip report. I’m not saying it’s taken me this long to recover, but three days and nights in New Orleans including walking near 40 miles, may have taken it’s toll.

This was my second time meeting up in New Orleans with my two best friends from high school, let’s call them BK from ATL and DK from Montreal. We graduated from an international school in Brussels (ISB) many many years ago (we are all in our mid-50s). On our last “reunion” trip, we ate too much, imbibed more than a little, and had a great time. In many ways this trip was a carbon copy, with some new adventures and stories to be shared (and, of course, some that won’t be printed here).

It sounds like you had quite the adventure in New Orleans! It’s great to hear that you and your high school friends enjoyed the trip, even if it did take a bit of recovery time afterward. New Orleans definitely has a way of making you forget your limits with all the great food, drinks, and exciting experiences. Walking 40 miles in a city filled with so much to see and do definitely adds up, too!

It’s always fun to get together with old friends, especially in a city as vibrant and rich in history as New Orleans. It sounds like you had a fantastic time revisiting some familiar spots, along with discovering new adventures along the way. What were some of the highlights of your trip? Any new favorite spots or unexpected finds that you’d recommend to others heading to the Big Easy?

  • Food Adventures – I’m guessing you had some memorable meals in New Orleans. Was there a particular restaurant that stood out, whether it was for the food, the atmosphere, or the service? Maybe some classic dishes like beignets or crawfish étouffée, or did you venture out for something unique?
  • Music and Jazz – New Orleans is synonymous with jazz and live music. Did you manage to catch a performance at places like Preservation Hall or any other local jazz bars? Was there a particular performance that really made the trip unforgettable?
  • Exploring New Orleans Neighborhoods – Walking around the French Quarter and the Garden District is a must, but did you also explore any lesser-known areas or local spots off the beaten path? What was your favorite neighborhood to stroll through?
  • Drinks and Bars – If you had some downtime, New Orleans is famous for its unique cocktails. Did you try a classic Sazerac, or perhaps a Hurricane? Were there any standout bars that had a great vibe or a memorable drink menu?

It’s also interesting that you’re keeping some of the trip’s adventures as “unprintable” – sounds like some stories that are better left to memory (or future reunions)! Trips like these tend to create bonds and stories that stay with you long after the souvenirs are packed away. How are BK and DK doing? Do you have any plans for the next reunion trip, or are you all still recovering from this one?

Thanks for sharing a little glimpse of your New Orleans adventure. It sounds like a wonderful reunion with plenty of stories to tell for years to come!
