Visiting Chicago during July 4th week

All,

My wife and I are travelling to Chicago during the first week of July and flying back July 6th night. We are checking into downtown hotel from July 1st (Tuesday) and checking out (July 4th). We are into sight seeing and not so much into museums. We figured out our plans during our stay in downtown. We are checking out on July 4th and would like to see the suburbs and stay outside for 4th and 5th night.

Any suggestions on places outside of Chicago for sightseeing. Searching google, suggested Lake Geneva.
