Are Buses Reliable?

I’ll be in town later this week, and the weather forecast makes me realize I’ll probably not be walking as much as I had planned. I’m in Lincoln Park and buses look like my most reliable way to get around to some of the places I want to go, both in morning commute times as well as later at night (like 11pm, possibly - more on that in a moment).

Coming from a city with unreliable buses that are seldom on time, I don’t necessarily take a bus schedule on its word. So I’m just checking to see if they are generally reliable, or if it’s worth an extra 10-15 minute walk to make it to an L station.

And about those later evenings - I know when I asked the question about the L when this trip was planned a month or two back I was mostly steered from riding in the later hours. Does that apply to buses? I may very well rely on uber/lyft from the club I’ll likely be at, but it may be worth knowing if it’s an option. I’d think the bus would be preferable to a train at that time of night, but who am I to say.

Thanks as always for any insights!

In general, buses in Chicago are relatively reliable, but their performance can be influenced by the time of day and weather conditions. During peak hours (typically morning and evening rush hours), buses can sometimes be delayed due to heavy traffic or construction. However, the city's transit system, operated by the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA), works diligently to maintain schedules. If you’re in Lincoln Park, you have easy access to several bus routes that can take you to various neighborhoods and attractions around the city.

If you're concerned about relying solely on bus schedules, you may want to consider checking the CTA's "Bus Tracker" app, which provides real-time updates on bus locations and expected arrival times. This will help you avoid waiting too long, especially if you're on a tight schedule.

In terms of evening service, CTA buses typically run later than the 'L' (train) service, which might be more limited in the late-night hours. Buses running later in the evening tend to be reliable, but the frequency can be reduced, and certain routes may experience longer wait times depending on demand. You’re correct in assuming that buses might be preferable to the train at night, especially if you’re traveling a shorter distance or wish to avoid crowded train stations. However, it’s always a good idea to check the schedule or use an app like Google Maps or CTA’s official app for real-time information before heading out.

Here are some factors to keep in mind when deciding between buses and the 'L' at night:

  • Safety: Buses tend to be a bit more populated late at night compared to trains, especially along busy routes, making them a safer option.
  • Convenience: If you're going to areas that are not directly accessible by the 'L', buses may be a more convenient option.
  • Uber/Lyft alternatives: In case buses are not an ideal option at night, rideshare services like Uber or Lyft are always a reliable backup, though they might be pricier than public transit.

All in all, if you’re not planning to go too far and the bus routes are well-connected to your destination, buses can be a great option, even at night. However, if you’re uncertain, walking to an 'L' station might be a safer and faster bet, particularly during off-peak hours.
