This morning I went to Islands of Adventure for walk. I had my annual pass out as I got to the front of the entry line and was going to scan it, but the guy said to just look at camera and in a few seconds the green checkmark came up. The last time I was there I had to scan my pass first. That was like a month or 6 weeks ago.
Has anyone else entered with facial recognition only?
In some ways it seems a little creepy, but I guess I don't really mind. Thinking about it, I did the same thing at customs when I came off a cruise ship last year. Not only did I not talk to a customs officer, I didn't even see one in the hall.
Yes, Universal Orlando has been gradually expanding the use of facial recognition for park entry, especially for annual pass holders. What you experienced is part of a newer system designed to streamline entry and reduce the need for scanning physical passes. It works by matching your face with the photo on your annual pass account, and once confirmed, you receive a green checkmark at the entry gate.
Many guests have reported that this method is quicker and more convenient, as you no longer have to fumble with a physical pass or phone app. However, it can feel a little intrusive if you’re not used to facial recognition technology. Universal assures users that the data is used strictly for entry purposes and is protected under their privacy policies.
Other points to consider:
Comparing to customs or airport facial recognition, the principle is similar – it’s meant to speed up processing and enhance security. Many people who have experienced this at Universal find it surprisingly fast and seamless, but some still prefer the option to use their pass manually if they feel uneasy about the technology.
Overall, it’s part of a broader trend toward biometric access in entertainment and travel sectors, and Universal is one of the major theme parks adopting it widely.
