Maine in October
Thinking of taking a trip to Maine in October. It will be with my husband and 22 month old. We definitely want to see Acadia and eat fresh lobster! We love relaxing, markets, outdoors, and local breweries/coffee shops/restaurants. We will likely drive from Maryland and looking to spend 3-4 nights there.
Would love suggestions on:
-best locations to visit
-where to stay (Towns, hotels, Airbnb)
-family-friendly activities
Thanks!
October is a wonderful time to visit Maine! The fall foliage will be in full swing, and you’ll have the chance to enjoy the beautiful outdoor scenery, delicious fresh lobster, and the charming local atmosphere. Here's a detailed guide for your trip with your husband and 22-month-old:
Best Locations to Visit:
Acadia National Park should absolutely be at the top of your list, as it offers beautiful landscapes, scenic drives, and family-friendly activities. But there are also other great spots around Maine that you’ll enjoy with a toddler.
- Acadia National Park – Known for its stunning autumn colors, Acadia offers a mix of easy, family-friendly hikes like the Jordan Pond Path or the Ocean Path, which are both relatively flat and easy for strollers. Don't miss the drive up Cadillac Mountain for breathtaking panoramic views of the park.
- Bar Harbor – A charming town right outside Acadia, perfect for strolling, shopping, and dining. You’ll find plenty of family-friendly restaurants, coffee shops, and local breweries to enjoy. The Bar Harbor Whale Watch Company also offers family-friendly tours (although some may be too long for a toddler).
- Camden – Known for its beautiful harbor and views of the mountains, Camden is another picturesque town to explore with your family. You can take a leisurely walk along the harbor or up to the Camden Hills State Park for beautiful vistas. The town has a number of local shops and restaurants that are welcoming to families.
- Rockport – A small town next to Camden, Rockport is quieter and offers lovely views of the ocean. It's perfect for relaxing and exploring local shops and cafés.
Where to Stay:
For a family-friendly experience, you’ll want to stay somewhere central and accessible with comfortable amenities. Both hotels and Airbnb options work well for different types of stays.
- Bar Harbor – Many families choose to stay in Bar Harbor, as it’s close to Acadia and has plenty of lodging options. Some options include:
- Hampton Inn Bar Harbor – Family-friendly and conveniently located near Acadia National Park. They offer spacious rooms and a free breakfast.
- Bar Harbor Inn – This historic hotel has beautiful views of the harbor and is within walking distance of the town’s shops and restaurants. It’s great for relaxing by the water.
- Airbnb – If you prefer a home-like setting, there are many Airbnbs in Bar Harbor and surrounding areas that offer family-friendly homes with kitchens, which can be convenient for your toddler.
- Camden and Rockport – If you want to stay somewhere quieter, Camden and Rockport are great options. Look for Airbnbs in this area, or you can stay in small inns that offer cozy accommodations, such as:
- The Camden Harbour Inn – A luxury option with great views of the harbor, although a bit more upscale for families.
- Airbnb in Camden or Rockport – There are several cozy cottages and homes in this area that are perfect for families. Many are nestled near the harbor, providing both charm and easy access to the outdoors.
Family-Friendly Activities:
Maine is perfect for outdoor activities with a toddler. Here are a few ideas:
- Scenic Drives – Maine’s coastline and Acadia National Park offer some of the most scenic drives in the country. Take a drive along the Park Loop Road in Acadia, which provides incredible views of the coastline and mountains.
- Jordan Pond House – After a walk around Jordan Pond, enjoy a popover and tea at the Jordan Pond House. The views are spectacular, and the area is peaceful for a picnic.
- Bar Harbor Whale Watch – While your toddler may not be ready for a full whale-watching tour, Bar Harbor Whale Watch Company also offers shorter family-friendly tours, including puffin watching (a great option for kids).
- Local Markets – Maine has fantastic farmers' markets. While you're in the area, you can check out the Bar Harbor Farmers Market or the Camden Farmers Market, where you can pick up local produce and artisanal goods.
- Lobster Pound Visit – Don’t miss out on fresh Maine lobster! Take a trip to a lobster pound like the Beal’s Lobster Pier in Bar Harbor or the Maine Lobster Festival in Rockport (if it’s open during your visit).
- Canoeing and Kayaking – Many places, including Bar Harbor and Camden, offer calm waters for family-friendly kayaking or canoeing. Some companies even offer family tours that cater to young children.
Weather in October:
October in Maine is typically cool but beautiful, with fall foliage in full swing. Expect daytime temperatures in the 50s-60s°F (10-20°C), with cooler evenings. It’s wise to pack layers and bring a warm jacket, especially for outdoor activities. The weather can be unpredictable, so having a raincoat on hand is a good idea.
Overall, Maine in October is a fantastic destination for a family trip. With its beautiful landscapes, delicious food, and welcoming atmosphere, you’ll create lasting memories. Enjoy your trip!
