Hotel suggestions

Stopping in Oahu for a short 2 night stay in late October primarily to visit the Pearl Harbor Memorial before flying to Hilo for Volcanoes NP. Renting a car but not planning on sitting by a pool or on the beach, maybe just a walk. Does staying in Waikiki make sense or is Kapolei a better choice? Appreciate any feedback, thanks!

For a short 2-night stay in Oahu with the main goal of visiting the Pearl Harbor Memorial and then flying to Hilo for Volcanoes National Park, the choice of hotel location depends mainly on convenience, traffic, and your priorities during the brief stay.

Waikiki

  • Pros:
    • Central and well-known area with many hotel options, restaurants, and shops.
    • Walking-friendly streets, so you can stretch your legs if you want a short stroll along the beach promenade or local streets.
    • Close to Honolulu International Airport (about 20–25 minutes), which makes your early morning flight to Hilo more convenient.
  • Cons:
    • Traffic congestion is common, especially during peak tourist times.
    • Touristy area — may feel crowded if you’re not planning to enjoy the beach or nightlife.

Kapolei / West Oahu

  • Pros:
    • Less crowded and quieter than Waikiki — more residential vibe.
    • Some hotels and accommodations may be newer or more budget-friendly.
  • Cons:
    • Farther from Pearl Harbor (about 30–40 minutes drive) and farther from the airport for your flight to Hilo.
    • Fewer dining, shopping, or walking options in the immediate area, meaning you might need to drive for meals or evening walks.
    • Less “Hawaii experience” in terms of the typical sights and vibe of Honolulu or Waikiki.

Recommendation:

Since your main objective is Pearl Harbor and you are only staying 2 nights without much focus on the beach or resort amenities, Waikiki makes more sense for a few reasons:

  • Shorter drive to the airport for your flight to Hilo.
  • Still reasonably close to Pearl Harbor (about 15–20 minutes drive depending on traffic).
  • More dining and walking options if you want to stretch your legs in the evening without going far.

Kapolei is a good choice if you want a quieter stay and possibly better rates, but for convenience and efficiency on a short itinerary focused on Pearl Harbor and quick access to the airport, Waikiki is usually preferable.

Additional tip: Traffic in Honolulu can be unpredictable. Plan extra time in the morning if you are driving to Pearl Harbor to ensure you arrive on time for tours or reservations.
