Time in Kahuli or partial RTH before drive to Napili?

This is our first trip to Maui. We've been to Kauai. Enjoy nature, beach, swimming, hiking, farms/farmer's markets, learning local history/culture. Focus is relaxation. We fly out in a week (August-last minute trip!) 1 night Kahuli, pick up the rental car next morning & 5 nights in Napili.

Not sure what to do that first day. We are closer to RTH and could drive part of it, or better to head toward Napili? Are there places you'd suggest stopping en route to Napili or places to check out around Kahuli before heading to Napili? I've read on the forum about traffic and the debris trucks and trying to sort out what might make the most sense.

Since this is your first trip to Maui and you’re flying into Kahului, it makes sense to plan your first day with a balance between relaxing, stretching your legs after the flight, and avoiding a long, stressful drive. Given that you’re staying only one night in Kahului and then heading to Napili, you have a few good options depending on your energy and interests.

Option 1: Explore Kahului and surroundings before heading to Napili

Visit Iao Valley State Park: A short drive from Kahului, this park offers easy hiking and beautiful scenery. You can enjoy a brief walk to the Iao Needle viewpoint.
Check out local farmers/farm stands: Ulupono Farms or the smaller stands along the way give a taste of Maui’s fresh produce and flowers.
Stop at Kahului Harbor area or local beaches like Kanaha Beach Park for a relaxing walk or to watch kite surfers.

Option 2: Partial drive along the Road to Hana (RTH) if you’re curious about the route

Since RTH is long and can be slow with traffic, debris trucks, and one-lane bridges, consider driving just the first 20–30 miles east from Kahului to get a taste of the rainforest, waterfalls, and coastal views, then turn back before it gets too late.
Good stopping points for a short taste of the RTH include Twin Falls (short hike to waterfall) and Garden of Eden Arboretum (beautiful gardens and ocean views).
This approach gives you the experience without committing to the full drive, keeping your afternoon manageable.

Drive directly to Napili after picking up your rental car to settle in and unwind.
