How to spend first day before hotel check-in?
Our flight gets in at 9:30, but we can't check into our hotel until 3:00. What would you recommend for our first day? We would like to start with a nice place for lunch, preferably with a view? Maybe a drive to orient ourselves? Would the Byodo-In Temple and Waimea Botanical Garden be a good destination after our flight and lunch? Our plan for the following two days includes Honolulu Museum of Art, and Kailua Beach Park. I so appreciate your thoughts.
Thanks,
Laurie
Arriving at 9:30 AM gives you plenty of time to enjoy a relaxed first day in Oahu before checking into your hotel at 3:00 PM. Since you’re interested in a nice lunch with a view and a scenic drive to get oriented, here’s a suggested plan:
Start with lunch near the coast or somewhere with a great view:
- Haleiwa Joe’s in Kaneohe: Located along the windward coast, it has a beautiful view of Kaneohe Bay and is known for fresh seafood and local favorites.
- Opal Thai Food or The Pig & The Lady in Honolulu: If you prefer staying closer to the airport, these spots offer flavorful meals in a more urban setting, though with limited views.
- Haleiwa Beach Park picnic style: Grab something from a local café or food truck and enjoy it near the ocean if you want a relaxed vibe.
After lunch, a scenic drive and a few sightseeing stops would be ideal:
- Drive along the Windward Coast: Take Kamehameha Highway (H3 if coming from Honolulu area) towards the Byodo-In Temple. The drive showcases lush valleys, mountains, and views of the coastline.
- Byodo-In Temple: Located in the Valley of the Temples, this is a serene spot perfect for walking around, taking photos, and enjoying the peaceful surroundings. It’s not crowded early in the day, making it perfect after a long flight.
- Waimea Valley Botanical Garden: Nearby, this garden offers easy walking paths, beautiful plants, and a short trail to a waterfall. Ideal for stretching your legs after sitting on a plane.
Other optional stops if time allows:
- Makapu’u Point Lookout for coastal views and easy short walks.
- Hanauma Bay lookout (even if you don’t snorkel) for a first impression of Oahu’s iconic bay.
After finishing your sightseeing, you can head to your hotel around 3 PM, check in, and perhaps take a short walk on a nearby beach to unwind. This plan balances a relaxed pace with scenic stops without feeling rushed.
