SOLO Dining in New Orleans?

Travelling solo to New Orleans in February from the UK, to tick off one of my bucket list experiences. About my only hobby is gourmet dining, and I can't wait to indulge in Southern cuisine. However, in the UK it's often difficult to secure a reservation for one person (even though I tend to hit the wine list hard and leave a good tip! : ) ) Is this likely to be an issue in early February? Thanks!

New Orleans is a fantastic city for solo dining, especially if your main goal is to indulge in gourmet Southern cuisine. February is outside the peak tourist season (except around Mardi Gras, which can fall in late February or early March), so you’ll generally find it easier to secure reservations as a single diner compared to busier times like Jazz Fest or spring break.

In many restaurants in New Orleans, dining solo is not an issue at all. Some tips to make the experience smoother and more enjoyable:

  • Consider making reservations ahead of time, especially at high-end or popular establishments such as Commander's Palace, Herbsaint, or Cochon. Most places welcome a solo diner, and your single reservation will typically be easier to accommodate than larger parties.
  • Bar seating is often an excellent choice for solo diners. Many restaurants have lively bars where you can order from the full menu, chat with bartenders or other diners, and enjoy a more casual but still gourmet experience.
  • If you prefer the classic Creole or Cajun fine dining scene, weekday evenings are generally less busy, so you can often walk in or get a reservation at shorter notice.

Other strategies and options:

  • Explore chef-driven tasting menus, which often work perfectly for solo diners and provide a curated experience of the best dishes the city offers.
  • Some restaurants offer counter seating in the kitchen or chef’s table experiences, which can be excellent for solo travelers interested in culinary insights.
  • Consider exploring local French Quarter or Garden District eateries with bar or small table options, which often have a welcoming atmosphere for single guests.

Overall, dining solo in New Orleans in early February is very doable and can even be more enjoyable than with a group, giving you the flexibility to explore different neighborhoods and culinary highlights at your own pace. Just keep an eye on Mardi Gras dates, as the city gets much busier closer to the festival.
