Best Eastern Sierra Fall Colors Spots

I will be staying in Mammoth Lakes the first weekend in October and am wondering what spots are some of the best to photograph Fall Colors from Bishop north. I'm willing to hike, too, if it gets to a good photo location. Thanks SO much!

The Eastern Sierra in early October is a fantastic time for fall colors, especially as the aspen groves and cottonwoods reach peak yellows and golds. Since you’ll be staying in Mammoth Lakes, you have a variety of accessible and scenic spots north toward Bishop that are perfect for photography, with options for both short walks and longer hikes.

Here are some of the top locations to consider:

  • June Lake Loop: Just north of Mammoth, this area has numerous aspen groves that turn vibrant gold in early October. Key photo spots include June Lake itself, Gull Lake, and the area near Silver Lake. Short hikes around the lakes offer great perspectives of reflections with colorful foliage.
  • McGee Creek Canyon: Located off Highway 395, south of Mammoth, this canyon has stunning aspen stands along the creek. It’s easily accessible from the road, and short hikes along the creek offer excellent photography opportunities.
  • Convict Lake: South of Mammoth, near the town of the same name, this lake is framed by jagged peaks and golden aspen. There’s a flat, 2-mile loop around the lake that provides multiple photographic angles and reflections.
  • Hot Creek Geological Site: Just east of Mammoth, this area features geothermal pools with colorful surrounding terrain and some aspen groves. It’s easily accessible for quick stops and dramatic photos.
  • Rock Creek Canyon: Near Tom’s Place, Rock Creek Canyon is slightly more remote but offers spectacular aspen groves with mountain backdrops. Short to moderate hikes allow you to get deeper into the colors away from the main road.
  • Bishop Creek Canyon (North of Bishop): This is one of the premier spots for fall colors in the Eastern Sierra. The canyon is full of aspen and cottonwoods, and several trails like North Lake, Lake Sabrina, and South Lake provide excellent vantage points. You can plan for short walks or longer hikes depending on your energy level.
  • South Lake and Sabrina Lake Area: High-elevation spots north of Bishop with striking mountain backdrops and large aspen groves. Best for mid-October colors, but early October often gives some good patches.

Tips for photographing fall colors:

  • Early morning or late afternoon light gives the best color and softer shadows.
  • Check the local fall color reports; the Eastern Sierra can vary by a week depending on elevation.
  • Bring layers and sturdy shoes if hiking; early October can be cool, especially at higher elevations.
  • For reflections in lakes, aim for calm days with little wind for mirror-like water shots.

With Mammoth Lakes as your base, you can comfortably explore June Lake Loop, Convict Lake, and McGee Creek in short drives, and make a day trip north toward Bishop Creek Canyon for more expansive aspen groves. The combination of mountains, lakes, and colorful trees makes the Eastern Sierra truly spectacular for photography at this time of year.
