Stay Recommendations - Family w/ teens

First time to Kauai, have been scouring these boards for all of the details on best options to stay, but would really appreciate personal input from those of you who have stayed before.

We are a family of 4 (teens 13&18) who will be there in March for 10 days.

We think Poipu, for location, action level, sunshine, beaches.

We have booked a 2 bedroom at the Hilton Point at Poipu (aware of mixed reviews), but think it generally fits the bill.

What we are looking for? Close to ocean, close (walkable) to swimmable beach (definitely ocean people), decent pool (like an afternoon pool lounge), gym is a bonus on property, centrally located. Bonus to be able to walk to a cool coffee shop or similar.

Like to watch sunsets, morning walks along ocean/beach, plus we will be venturing out to see the amazing sights of the island (we will have a car).

Are there any 'perfect matches' for accommodations that we are missing?

Appreciate your input immensely!!!

Kauai is an amazing destination, and Poipu is a great choice for a family trip with teens. It’s one of the sunniest areas on the island, with great beaches and plenty of activities for all ages. The Hilton Grand Vacations Club at Poipu is a solid option, though, as you mentioned, there are some mixed reviews, but if you like the location and the amenities, it could still work well for your needs. Here’s a breakdown of what you’re looking for and some other accommodation recommendations that could be a perfect fit:

What You’re Looking For:

  • Close to the Ocean and a Swimmable Beach: Poipu is known for its excellent beaches, particularly for those who love to swim and snorkel. Poipu Beach Park is an iconic spot with calm waters and great for families.
  • Decent Pool and Gym: The pool is often a crucial part of a family’s stay, and having access to a gym is a nice bonus for keeping up with workouts while traveling.
  • Centrally Located with Walkable Attractions: Poipu is well-positioned to explore the island’s south and west sides, with easy access to shops, restaurants, and local attractions.
  • Sunset Views and Morning Walks: Poipu offers great sunset views over the ocean, and there are several walking paths and beaches for morning walks with scenic views.
  • Nearby Coffee Shops: Having local coffee spots to visit in the mornings can make the experience even more enjoyable.

Accommodation Recommendations:

  • Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa: This is a luxurious option located right on the beach with a large pool, multiple dining options, and a beautiful spa. The resort has direct beach access, and it’s close to Poipu Beach for morning walks and sunsets. They also have a gym and great facilities for families. The location is convenient for exploring Kauai, and the resort has a more upscale feel with lots of space and amenities. It's not too far from coffee shops and local restaurants.
  • Koa Kea Hotel & Resort: Located just steps from Poipu Beach, Koa Kea offers a more boutique experience with a focus on high-quality service and beautiful oceanfront views. It’s a smaller resort than the Grand Hyatt, but it’s an excellent choice for families who want to be close to the beach, with easy access to the water and sunsets. It has a decent pool area and gym, though it’s a bit more laid-back in terms of activities compared to larger resorts. It’s also within walking distance of nearby cafes and shops.
  • Whalers Cove Resort: If you're looking for a condo-style stay with more privacy and flexibility, Whalers Cove Resort offers spacious oceanfront units that are perfect for families. It’s a smaller resort but located right on the ocean with easy beach access. There’s a pool, and the location is close to Poipu Beach Park. It's ideal for families who want more independence and the option to cook meals, plus it’s near local cafes and shops.
  • Marriott's Waiohai Beach Club: This is another great option if you’re looking for something more family-oriented with large, comfortable accommodations. Located near Poipu Beach, it’s perfect for beach lovers and has a beautiful pool and plenty of outdoor space. It’s a bit quieter than the Grand Hyatt but still close to everything you might need, including cafes and restaurants. They also have a fitness center and other amenities for an active family.
  • The Point at Poipu: Since you’ve already booked at Hilton Grand Vacations Club at Poipu, another recommendation to consider is The Point at Poipu (also by Hilton). It’s right next to the beach with a nice pool area and also offers great views of the ocean. It has condo-style accommodations, which are good for families, and it's centrally located for easy access to beaches, shops, and restaurants.

Summary:

  • If you prefer a larger resort with top-notch amenities, Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa is a great choice for families and has a lot to offer in terms of facilities, including a large pool, multiple dining options, and easy beach access.
  • If you want something smaller and more boutique, Koa Kea Hotel & Resort offers a more intimate experience right next to Poipu Beach.
  • Whalers Cove Resort is perfect if you prefer a condo-style stay with more independence and privacy, while still being close to the beach and shops.
  • Marriott's Waiohai Beach Club offers family-friendly condos with excellent beach access and is more relaxed than some of the larger resorts.

It sounds like the Hilton Grand Vacations Club at Poipu could work for your family, but I’d recommend considering the other options based on the type of experience you’re looking for. All these resorts are centrally located in Poipu, making it easy to access the best beaches, restaurants, and activities on the island. Enjoy your stay in Kauai!
