My husband loves to gamble. I love live music. We both love trying new food. First time visitors. We are thinking of staying at caesars casino(not sure of its harrahs or caesars). We are in our 50s and hoping we can walk from hotel to many of the sites. Is caesars a good location that is close to attractions. We saw its part of the central business district but not sure what that means.. ie is there live music/food in that area.thabsk for all the help and feel free to recommend any must do activities. He loves the outdoors- fishing specifically(and casino) amd I love live music and thrift shopping :)

Staying at Caesars (Harrah’s) Hotel in New Orleans is a solid choice for first-time visitors, especially for a mix of gambling, live music, and food experiences. Harrah’s is located in the Central Business District (CBD), which is the downtown area just adjacent to the French Quarter. This location is convenient for walking to many attractions, dining spots, and entertainment venues.

The CBD is busy during the day and evening with restaurants, bars, and office workers, but it’s generally quieter than the French Quarter. You will find live music and good food nearby, though some of the iconic jazz and nightlife experiences are concentrated in the French Quarter and along Frenchmen Street, which is about a 10–15 minute walk from Harrah’s.

For your interests, here’s a breakdown of what you can do:

  • Gambling: Harrah’s has a large casino with slots, table games, and poker, so your husband will have plenty of options.
  • Live music: While Harrah’s occasionally hosts music events, the best live music in New Orleans is found on Frenchmen Street (short walk or a quick rideshare). Jazz, blues, and brass bands are plentiful there.
  • Food: The CBD and nearby French Quarter offer an array of restaurants from Creole and Cajun cuisine to fine dining. You’ll also find local casual spots for po’boys, seafood, and more.
  • Walking access: You can easily walk to the French Quarter, Canal Street, and the riverfront. Streetcars are available for further excursions or to explore areas like the Garden District.
  • Thrift/Shopping: For thrift shops and local boutiques, the Marigny and Bywater neighborhoods are accessible by a short ride. Magazine Street is also a shopping hub with eclectic stores.

If your husband enjoys the outdoors, including fishing, there are options for day trips or half-day excursions:

  • Fishing charters on Lake Pontchartrain or nearby bayous (about 20–30 minutes from downtown).
  • Swamp tours that sometimes combine sightseeing with fishing experiences.
  • Exploring City Park and the riverfront for casual outdoor walks.

Other must-do activities for first-time visitors:

  • Walk through the French Quarter and Jackson Square.
  • Take a steamboat ride on the Mississippi River.
  • Enjoy beignets at Café du Monde.
  • Visit the French Market and local art galleries.
  • Consider a second-line parade if one is happening during your stay.

In summary, Harrah’s is a convenient downtown location with good access to both casinos and city attractions. You’ll need a short walk or a quick ride to fully experience New Orleans’ live music and thrift shopping, but it’s a very practical base for a first-time visit.
