Just Back: Mauna Kea Beach Hotel & 4S Hualalai

Happy to answer questions. 3rd trip to Big Island in four years so obviously we love it! Also been to Oahu, Maui, Kauai and Lanai, all great but the Big Island just speaks to us! Hope to spend longer periods of time there once we are retired. Overall, both great resorts, quite different which is why the combo worked for us…also husband is a golfer enjoys the different courses. Pros and cons (minor) to both resorts, at this point 4S is more expensive but Mauna Kea Beach Hotel prices appear to be increasing significantly following renovation so they may becoming cost comparable. Both are extensive properties with many bells and whistles…Mauna Kea Beach Hotel has the better beach and views (and easy access to Hapuna Beach) however, 4S restaurants and bars are mere steps from the water which is lovely. We had “basic” ocean view rooms at each resort…4S are significantly larger with a “ foyer”, walk in closet and very large bathroom and outdoor shower for ground floor rooms. However, service was actually better at Mauna Kea Beach Hotel and for Hawaiian ambiance/charm and architecture MKBH gets our vote, especially the Asian art. Don’t think you can go wrong with either, depends on what “speaks” to you! And if your trip is longer than a week, you might like to try both as we did! So sad it’s over…already planning our return! Ask away!

Aloha! It sounds like your Big Island trip was fantastic, and it’s clear why you’re so drawn to this island. Both Mauna Kea Beach Hotel (MKBH) and Four Seasons Hualalai (4S) are exceptional resorts, and choosing between them really depends on what aspects of a resort experience matter most to you.

Here’s a breakdown based on your experience and observations:

  • Beach and Views: MKBH has arguably the best beach on the island with stunning ocean views and direct, easy access to Hapuna Beach. It’s ideal if beach time and scenic vistas are your priority.
  • Room Layout and Space: 4S Hualalai rooms are larger, particularly the ground floor options with a foyer, walk-in closet, large bathroom, and even an outdoor shower. This gives a more expansive, resort-style suite feel.
  • Restaurants and Bars: 4S has several restaurants and bars just steps from the water, which creates a lovely, integrated dining experience.
  • Service: You noted that MKBH had slightly better service overall, which can make a big difference in the comfort and personalized feel of a stay.
  • Ambiance and Charm: MKBH stands out for Hawaiian ambiance, architecture, and cultural touches like the Asian art displayed. This can provide a deeper sense of place and charm.
  • Golfing: Both resorts offer golf, but if the husband enjoys golf, the different courses provide a nice variety.

Additional considerations:

  • Pricing: 4S is currently more expensive, though MKBH prices are rising after renovations, making costs more comparable over time.
  • Trip Length: If you have more than a week, splitting your stay between both resorts can give you the best of both worlds—beachfront charm and luxury suite amenities.

Overall, both resorts are excellent. Choose MKBH if Hawaiian charm, beach access, and service are your priorities. Opt for 4S if room size, suite amenities, and restaurants on the water are more important. For longer trips, combining the two, as you did, provides a rich and varied experience.

It sounds like you already have your heart set on returning—so whichever resort you pick, you’re guaranteed a memorable stay!
