Museum Abashiri Prison is Japan's only outdoor museum preserving and relocating actual prison buildings used during the Meiji to Taisho periods. Spanning an area equivalent to about 3.5 Tokyo Domes, the museum features eight nationally designated Important Cultural Properties, including the iconic five-wing radial cell block (Central Guard Station), the chapel, and the office building. These structures are ingeniously designed and represent some of the oldest surviving wooden prison architecture in the world.

At the Prison History Museum, visitors can experience the stories of prisoners who endured hard labor to develop roads and farms through models, multilingual guides, and a three-screen projection theater. This offers a profound connection to the sacrifices of labor and the history of Hokkaido's development. Additionally, the museum includes a prison cafeteria where you can try prisoner meals, a souvenir shop, and facilities such as accessible amenities and parking.
