On our drive from Akita City to the Namahage Museum in Oga, we made an impromptu stop at Roadside Station Akitakō—and we’re so glad we did. What initially caught our eye was the stunning view of the port, with the peaceful water and boats creating a postcard-worthy scene.
Though we arrived a little too early for the eateries to open, the souvenir shop was already bustling, offering a wide selection of local specialties and regional snacks. It was a great spot to pick up some unique gifts and enjoy a glimpse into Akita’s coastal offerings. The washrooms were clean and well-maintained, which we’ve come to appreciate greatly on road trips in Japan.
After browsing the shop, I walked over to the harbor area right next to the station and was pleasantly surprised to spot a naval vessel docked, adding a touch of intrigue and uniqueness to the stop. The crisp sea air and quiet surroundings made for a peaceful photo break.
A great little detour with scenic views, a relaxing vibe, and a solid introduction to the charm of Akita’s coastal life.
