Today we have the opportunity to visit Almaty, the largest city in Kazakhstan. It used to be the capital city from 1929-1998 before moving to Astana. In Almaty, there is a very beautiful old cathedral, Ascension Cathedral, or what the locals call Zenkov's Cathedral, located in Panfilov Park. It is an Orthodox cathedral in bright yellow, decorated with beautiful domes. It is more than 100 years old. It was built by the first bishop of the Turkistan eparchy and designed by architect Pavlovich Zenkov. Construction began in 1904 and was completed in 1907.
Zenkov's Cathedral is 56 meters high and is the second tallest wooden building in the world. The highlight of this cathedral is that it was built without using a single nail. The cathedral is a symbol of the past religious prosperity of this land. Even though time has passed, the uniqueness of the architecture hidden in the garden has not diminished at all.
For those who plan to visit Almaty, do not miss visiting this cathedral. It is easy to get to. Not far from Zhibek Zholy metro station, located in the center of Almaty. #Kazakhstan #TravelAbroad #Almaty
