Oude Kerk, or the Old Church, is the oldest church and building in Amsterdam. Initially erected as a wooden structure in the early 13th century, it was later transformed into a stone church. Over the years, many modifications occurred, including its conversion from Roman Catholic to a Protestant (Calvinist) church in the 16th century. Notable features include the grand medieval wooden ceiling, the four pipe organ, and numerous graves of Amsterdam's citizens. Some prominent individuals buried here are Saskia van Uylenburgh, Rembrandt's wife; Catharina Questiers, a celebrated poet of the Dutch Golden Age; and Frans Banninck Cocq, an Amsterdam mayor depicted in Rembrandt's famous painting, the Nightwatch. Nowadays, the church also functions as a contemporary art center showcasing modern artists’ work. General admission is €13.50, but it's free for I amsterdam card holders. There aren't many panels, so you likely won't spend more than an hour inside. Still, a visit is worthwhile; however, if budget constraints exist, consider visiting the Nieuwe Kerk (New Church) instead.
