The most popular attraction is the penguin walk

This time on our trip to Hokkaido, we visited Asahikawa 🏕, and the must-see spot is the Asahikawa Zoo. Their most popular event is the penguin walk, which takes place twice a day, once in the morning and once in the afternoon 🐧. During the event, the zookeepers lead the penguins from their habitat to take a stroll near the zoo entrance, lasting about 20 minutes. Seeing the penguins up close is absolutely adorable 😍.

The zoo houses nearly a hundred species of animals. If you take your time to observe carefully and participate in various interactive activities, you could easily spend an entire day there 🤣. For us, a simple walk around the zoo took almost 3 hours to see all the animals we wanted to. Some areas only have one or two animals, which can feel a bit lonely 🥲. The most disheartening part might be the indoor bear enclosure and the polar bear exhibit, where the bears pace back and forth mechanically, suggesting their lives might be quite dull.

Overall, the experience was very rewarding. After all, you get to see a variety of animals in one visit, and many of the free-range setups give the animals a good amount of freedom 🦚.
