Black Sand Beach: A Different Side of Bali

#balionbudget

If it seems like all the beaches in Bali are the same, just head north. Where the sea is calm and the sand isn't golden, but black, like a volcano.

This is the coastline of Lovina and Amed. The sand here is soft and warm, as if it absorbs the sun more than normal. At dawn, it glistens like metallic powder. There are almost no people, only fishermen pulling out their jukung boats, and the sea breathes evenly and calmly.

📍 Where it's located: North and east Bali – the districts of Lovina, Amed, and Tulamben.
🕐 When to go: In the morning, before it gets too hot, or towards sunset – then the black sand glows in the sun.

How to travel on a budget

🛵 Transportation: Scooter rental – about $6–8 per day. From Ubud, the drive takes 2.5–3 hours, but the views along the way are worth it.
💰 Accommodation: In Lovina and Amed, you can find cozy hotels right on the water for $20–25 per night.
🐠 What to do: Grab a mask and snorkel near the shore—there are corals and fish underwater, and in Amed, you can see a sunken ship.

Black sand, hot to the touch, a calm sea, and a complete feeling of being at the end of the world. This isn't the Bali with its crowds of tourists. This is a Bali where you can simply be.
