Wat Pho (Temple of the Reclining Buddha), also known as the Reclining Buddha of Wat Pho, is a Buddha image in the posture of provoking Asura Indrahu. It is the third-longest reclining Buddha in Thailand. The Buddha's body is constructed of brick and mortar, and is entirely lacquered and gilded. Each foot of the Reclining Buddha measures 1.5 meters wide and 5 meters long, and features 108 auspicious symbols inlaid with mother-of-pearl patterns. Each auspicious symbol is enclosed in a small square, surrounded by a wheel symbol in the center of the foot. Each foot has the same symbol on each side.
The Wat Pho Giant is a sculpture at the entrance archway to the temple's mondop (hall of four-sided scriptures). It resembles a giant from the Ramayana epic. It is often mistaken for the Lanthan (Chinese stone doll) at the entrance to Wat Pho.
The Wat Pho Giant: According to legend, the Wat Pho Giant was friends with the Wat Chaeng Giant. One day, the Wat Pho Giant crossed the river to borrow money from the Wat Chaeng Giant, but when the money was borrowed, the Wat Chaeng Giant became enraged. The two sides fought until trees felled everywhere, and the area was flattened to the point of being flattened, thus giving rise to the name "Tha Tian."
When Shiva learned of the conflict that had caused the havoc, he punished both giants by turning them into stone. The giant of Wat Pho guarded the ordination hall, while the giant of Wat Chaeng guarded the viharn. From then on, the giants from both sides never fought again.
